HLG Competes Well at WashU Invite

The Hannibal-LaGrange track & field team kicked off the Easter weekend by heading down to St. Louis to compete in the Washington University Invitational. Competing is the venue that hosted the 1904 Olympic track & field competition, several Trojans were able to make some history of their own.

RESULTS

On the women's side, the team was paced by 9 top-10 individual finishes and 4 broken school records. Jasman Edmond had a fantastic day taking 10th place in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Jasman then wrapped up her day by leading off the women's 4x400m relay team that took 9th place overall. Her 100m dash time of 12.82 set a new school record in the event. The women also found success in the pole vault as Danielle Sturgeon, Amanda Miller, Caitlin McCoy, and Holland McCoy all secured top-10 finishes. The ladies also had a strong showing in the throwing events as Caitlin McCoy (javelin) and Abbie Herrold (shot put) both came through with top-10 finishes. Abbie's toss of10.47m set a new school record in the shot put. Kelsey Anderson took 11th place in the discus with a toss of 30.55m. Indoor national qualifier got closer to accomplishing the same distinction in the outdoor season by taking third place in the 5,000m Racewalk with a time of 32:04.00.

The men were led by the strong showings of John Anderson and Philiph Tonui. John ran to a 10th place finish in the 110m Hurdles (16.74) and followed that effort up with a 7th place showing in the 400m Hurdles (58.01). Both of those times set new team records in the events. Philiph battled a steady rain on Friday night to claim second place in the men's 10,000m run. His time of 31:56.55 qualifies Philiph for his second event at the 2010 NAIA Outdoor National Championships and sits currently as the 15th best time in the country. Ben Griffin continued to show growth and his tremendous potential by racing to a time of 4:27.61 in the 15oom run.

Coach's Comments: I thought that we had a very strong meet this weekend. A couple of athletes have been on the verge of strong performances and they came through this weekend. This was our first real opportunity to see the entire team in action and I think that we will get better and better as the season continues if we continue to work hard and stay focused.
