The HLG Trojan track & field team got back to work this past Saturday as the team traveled to Missouri Valley College for the first meet of the new year
However, junior Cara Grinde got 2010 started right for the Trojans on Friday night as she finished 8th in the pole vault at the Southern Illinois University Invitational. Cara, the only non-NCAA Division 1 athlete to finish in the top 12 finishers, vaulted 3.40m (11'1.75"), a mark that qualified her for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in March. Assistant Coach Jason Scott also competed in the meet, finishing third with a 16'6" effort in the pole vault.
MEET RESULTS
On the women's side, there were several standout performances. Sarah Erickson was victorious in the mile in what was the freshman's first collegiate track meet. Sophomore two-sport standout Jasman Edmond had a solid outing, finishing second in the 200m dash and third in the 55m dash. Freshman Brittni Bastean reached the 5 foot mark in the high jump, taking home a third place finish in that event. Freshman Abbie Herrold had a strong showing in the shot put, placing fourth with a school-record throw. All in all, the ladies team set four new school records.
The men were led by sophomore Philiph Tonui as the two-time NAIA qualifier won the mile, cruising to a time of 4:33.76 and winning the event by 38 seconds. Sophomore Michael Clemons had a good showing in the long jump, placing third in the event and setting a new school record with a leap of 6.04m. Senior Gheron Dorsett showed great improvement in the weight throw and finished third in the event. In addition, the men equaled the accomplishment of the women's team by securing four school record performances.
The track & field team will make the short trip to Jacksonville, IL on Saturday 1/23 to take part in the Illinois College Snowbird Invitational.
